Hybrid Body

The Hybrid Body Project, an extension of my capstone project (see link above), focused on developing a wearable device designed to assist visually impaired individuals in navigating their surroundings more safely and effectively. In addition to the hardware and low-level code development of the project explained on the capstone page, computer vision, localization, and mapping technologies were used to even further enhance the user's awareness of their surroundings. These additional components for the robotics club aspect of the project were made possible using an additional hardware component to this project: the glasses camera. This camera module is designed to clip onto any standard pair of glasses and utilizes an ESP32 microcontroller as well as a Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3.

As the project lead, I was responsible for managing the project timeline, budget, and recruitment, as well as mentoring other team members. Many of our members are new to the engineering school or are more specialized in either hardware or software, so I have been teaching them the necessary integration skills they need to assist in this project. Additionally, it is my job keep the team motivated by fostering a collaborative and supportive environment, setting clear milestones, and celebrating the small wins of our project members to maintain momentum and enthusiasm as we continue developing the project.

For a deeper dive into the hardware aspects and theory behind this project, look at the capstone page of my portfolio (link at the top of this page and in the page menu). Also, take a look at the video submission below and the written submission linked above for The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering and VentureWell Design by Biomedical Undergraduate Teams (DEBUT) Challenge. In the submissions, we give a deeper dive into the project that received an honorable mention and cash prize out of the 123 total applicants!
